They arrived at the hospital about twenty minutes later. Traffic was a beast and without a siren or lights to clear everyone out of their way, they had to crawl there like anyone else. Mike whistled at the size of the building when they pulled off the highway. It was rather imposing. Whoever designed this place of healing and comfort had not embraced the warm and fuzzy on the outside.

It took another twenty minutes of Logan flashing his identification and asking where Aaron Baker was. In the end, what gave them the most headway was when Mike flashed his smile. Never underestimate the popularity of basic cable reality TV, Logan noted to himself.

They eventually found themselves on Aaron’s floor. They asked at the nurse’s station, which required more ID flashing and Mike’s pearly whites. They were in Aaron’s doorway moments later.

By the time they stepped into Aaron’s room, the sun was headed down outside the window and some early lights shone through the encroaching darkness. Given the floor they were on, the view was rather impressive.

Baker was dozing when they arrived. His bed was up in a seated position, with the television on to some sitcom Logan didn’t recognize. There were tubes going into Baker’s arm, but a quick check showed it was mostly to combat dehydration.

In the room, which Aaron had to himself, there was just one chair; Mike went to the room next door to grab another. Logan dragged the one chair over to the side of the bed. He tried to be quiet about it, but he also wanted Baker to be awake, so he made just enough noise to make the man’s eyes flutter open.

“Mr. Field?” he asked.

“Please, call me Logan. I thought I told you that.”

“Like the comic book character,” Baker said and laughed.

It wasn’t the first time Logan had been compared to the X-Man known as Wolverine. It came with the name. Sometimes he wished he had claws, an unbreakable skeleton and super-healing powers.

Mike returned to the room with another chair. He set it down next to Logan’s and leaned forward.

“Hello, Mr. Baker, my name is Michael Quinton. You can call me Mike.”

Aaron’s eyes grew wider for a moment. “Wow, a television star in my room! Did Bigfoot get spotted in the hospital?”

Baker snickered and seemed to think this was funny. He must be on some good pain meds, Logan thought.

“Mr. Baker, I hear you came to my office and said you saw the bird. You saw the Piasa Bird?” Logan asked.

Baker nodded in an exaggerated sort of way, chin all the way down to his chest, then all the way up into the air and then back down. “I sure did. Almost killed me. We’ve got a real problem, gentlemen.”

The word “gentlemen” came out “gennulman”, but Logan got the point.

Mike jumped in. “Mr. Baker, did you get a video of it? Logan’s people said you did. Can we see it?”

“Sure did, Mike,” Aaron replied. “They took my pants. Where are my pants? Did I have pants on when I got here?”

Mike turned to check out the closet across from the bed.
